Water & Wastewater Treatment Progress

ENVIRONMENTAL

Water and wastewater treatment is a critical link in the global water cycle, playing an indispensable role in safeguarding water resources, protecting ecological environments, and ensuring human health. In recent years, driven by technological innovation, policy guidance, and growing environmental awareness, the water and wastewater treatment industry has achieved remarkable progress across multiple dimensions:

1. Technological Innovation & Upgrade

  • Advanced Treatment Processes: Traditional processes such as activated sludge have been continuously optimized. Meanwhile, advanced technologies including membrane separation (e.g., ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis), advanced oxidation, and biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal have been widely applied. These technologies effectively improve the removal rate of pollutants, enabling treated water to meet stricter discharge or reuse standards.
  • Smart Treatment Systems: Integrated with Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and artificial intelligence, water treatment plants have realized intelligent monitoring and operation. Sensors collect real-time data on water quality, flow, and equipment status, and AI algorithms optimize process parameters, reducing energy consumption and operational costs while improving treatment efficiency.

2. Expansion of Treatment Scale & Coverage

  • Urban Infrastructure Construction: Countries around the world have accelerated the construction and renovation of urban water supply and drainage networks. Large-scale wastewater treatment plants have been built in densely populated areas, significantly increasing the urban wastewater treatment rate. In many regions, the coverage of centralized water treatment facilities has extended to suburban and rural areas, narrowing the gap in environmental governance between urban and rural areas.
  • Industrial Wastewater Governance: Targeted treatment solutions have been developed for high-concentration, difficult-to-degrade industrial wastewater from industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, and printing and dyeing. Specialized treatment facilities and resource recovery technologies have been promoted, realizing the reduction, harmlessness, and resource utilization of industrial wastewater.

3. Recycling & Resource Utilization

  • Wastewater Reuse: Treated reclaimed water is increasingly used in non-potable fields such as industrial production, urban greening, road cleaning, and groundwater recharge, alleviating the pressure of water resource shortage and forming a sustainable water cycle system.
  • Resource Recovery: Technologies for recovering valuable substances from wastewater have been matured. For example, phosphorus and nitrogen are recovered as fertilizers, and organic matter is converted into biogas through anaerobic digestion for energy supply, turning wastewater treatment into a resource-oriented industry.

4. Strengthening of Policy Supervision & Industry Standardization

  • Governments worldwide have issued stricter water pollution control policies and discharge standards, forcing enterprises to strengthen wastewater treatment. Meanwhile, supportive policies such as subsidies, tax incentives, and market-oriented operation mechanisms have been introduced to encourage social capital participation in the water treatment industry.
  • The establishment and improvement of industry standards and technical specifications have standardized the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of water treatment projects, promoting the healthy and orderly development of the industry.

Looking forward, with the continuous advancement of technology and the deepening of global environmental cooperation, water and wastewater treatment will move towards a more efficient, intelligent, and sustainable direction, making greater contributions to the protection of water ecology and the sustainable development of human society.
